Obviously feeling the pinch from the roaming caps that were enforced by the European Commission in July, O2 has made the decision to double the cost of using a mobile outside of Europe.
From November 28 the cost of receiving a call in the US will rise from 39p to 90p per minute and making a call will go up from 90p to £1.10. Sending a text will cost 40p, where it previously cost just 25p. Data will also be charged at £6 per MB!
The announcement comes at a time when it is suggested that mobile roaming revenues will grow beyond £50 billion by 2017, up from £28 billion this year, as a result of a reduction in roaming charges which will attract significant data usage increases, according to Juniper Research.
Therefore has O2 made the correct decision and are the other networks likely to follow suit? We suspect that O2 may live to regret their decision however we also feel that the other networks will inevitably continue the trend. However for those people savvy enough there are some very simple steps you can take to reduce your roaming charges considerably.
